The Deosai National Park is located in between Skardu, Gultari, Kharmang and Astore Valley , in Gilgit-Baltistan region of Northern Pakistan. In Urdu language Deosai Urdu means ‘the land of Giants’. It is locally called Ghbiarsa by Balti people because it is only accessible in summer.
Deosai National Park falls in Skardu Baltistan an average elevation of 4,114 metres (13,497 ft) above sea level, making the these Plains one of the highest plateaus in the world. The park protects an area of 3,000 square kilometres (1,200 sq mi). It is well known for its rich flora and fauna of the Karakoram-West Tibetan Plateau alpine step peeco region. In the Spring season it is covered by sweeps of wildflowers and a wide variety of butterflies.
Deosai is accessible from Skardu District in the north, Gultari Kharmang district in the south-east, and the Astore District in the west. Deosai is located approximately 30 km from Skardu city and its the shortest route to visit Deosai. Most foreigners visit there via Skardu. It takes 1 hour to reach Deosai top via Sadpara Skardu. Another route is from Astore valley via Chilim. It is also accessible from Shila valley. The people of Gultari travel via these planes. There is another route called Burgi la via Tsoq Kachura valley Skardu.
This trek is new, recently opened for foreigners. It’s the most beautiful and fascinating area of Gilgit-Baltistan, without breathtaking sceneries all around. Natural Beauty can be seen on its peak with all kind and colors of wild flowers, greenery, lakes and Mountain Rivers flowing down to different valleys.
Yogurt, milk and butter milk are in abundance in Deosai as villagers camp here with cattle’s during the whole summer season. The charm is so great that once you visit this fascinating area, you will feel like visiting this trek again and again.
